Xiao Zhang is a filmmaker and artist based in Dongguan and Los Angeles. They work with film, video, analog printings and installation. Their practice centers on personal poetics drawn from memory, language, the body and queer diaspora, attending to haptic sites of trace, absence, failure and exile. They are a MacDowell Fellow and a fellow of the 71st Flaherty Film Seminar.
Their work has been presented internationally at festivals including MoMA Doc Fortnight, BFI London Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, FIRST International Film Festival, Beijing International Short Film Festival, Prismatic Ground, EXiS and Fracto Film, as well as at museums and art institutions including REDCAT (Los Angeles), Tai Kwun (Hong Kong), UCCA (Beijing) and Asian NOW Paris Asian Art Fair. Zhang holds an MFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from Beijing Film Academy.
